Built for Tremor – The 32 level expansion pack for Quake. Tremor looks to re-capture the feel of Quake as it was back in '96 with lo-fi visuals and short, fun level design.
The third level I took on for Tremor was another base map, which has always been my favourite Quake theme. Again I took inspiration from the original E2M1 by starting with a central idea (the bridge across the water room) and building outwards.
I tried to make it distinct from my other base map E3M1 by making extensive use of water and flooded areas to connect each section, which lent well to the pumping station theme.
Initial paper designs and ideas
A lot of the sketches I did for this level were working out ways to connect the exterior and interior sections of base. I had initial ideas of the interior being sealed and pressurised, with a moon pool area that the player would swim down deep to access – and airlock sections between internal/external sections. I eventually scrapped the idea in favour of having barred windowed areas that overlooked the exterior – due to the limitation of no glass / alpha textures in ‘vanilla’ Quake.
